Weekend Roundup: Athletes battle through tough conditions at Tahoma Track Festival

TACOMA - It wouldn't be track and field season in Washington if it weren't for any weird weather conditions, and Saturday's Tahoma Track Festival at Mt. Tahoma High School went through just about every weather combination you could think of.


Running through the rain, hail and wind, hundreds of athletes battled through the harsh conditions but managed to produce quality times and marks in this pre-state meet.


Highlighted by the boys 1,600-meter, the Bishop Blanchet trio of Vincent Recupero, Drew Oliver and Will Schneider went 1-3 to lead seven runners under the 4:30 barrier.


Recupero came away with the win in a time of 4 minutes, 20.91 seconds, with Oliver trailing in second in 4:21.09 and Schneider following in third in 4:21.84. Seattle Prep's Jack Henzke was a close second into the top three, running a season best time of 4:21.86 to place fourth.


Bellarmine's Roman Thomas ran a season best time of 4:24.01 to finish fifth, with Eastlake's Elijah Yoon (4:26.19, 6th) and Central Kitsap's Blake Reynolds (4:26.86, 7th) rounding out the other sub 4:30 competitors.


Glacier Peak's Jana Willems, who recently committed to the University of Idaho, won her sixth and seventh races of the year, winning the girls 100 in 12.78 and the 200 in 26.07.


Curtis's LeRoy Horton won the boys 100 in 11.07, beating out Mt. Si's Jacob Hall in 11.23. Hall won the boys 200 in 22.75.


Hazen's Kenyon Andrews ran a personal best time of 50.53 to win the boys 400 over North Creek's Gavin Watkins-Keeler in a personal best 50.96.


Ava Simms makes her 400 season debut for Curtis with a win in the girls race in season best time of 57.06.


Bush's Amare Fields and Lincoln's (Seattle) Evan Kelly went wire-to-wire in the boys 800, with Fields coming out on top by a margin of 1:55.10-1:55.97. Eastlake's Justin Hom took third in a season best time of 1:57.46.


Auburn Riverside's Julia Couch outkicked Bishop Blanchet's Zoe Louis to win the girls 800 in a time of 2:18 to 2:18.43. Dahna Kim of Lincoln (Seattle) was third in a personal best 2:20.14.


Yelm's Zachary Walsh ran a season best time of 9:24.17 to out lean Enumclaw's Evan Cheney's time of 9:24.57 to win the boys 3,200.


Curtis' Eliza White also ran a season best time of 11:06.56 to win the girls race, defeating Bellarmine's Alison Whalen's personal best time of 11:10.07.


Kentridge's Alex Conner lowers his personal best time in the 300 hurdles to 39.00 to win the boys race over Peninsula's Nathan Kuhau in 40.92.


Yelm's Bethany Venuto also ran a personal best time in the girls 300 hurdles, running 48.51. Stadium's Tylie Fuqua was second in 49.41.


Brayden Platt and Trevontay Smith won their respective field competitions for Yelm, with Platt winning the boys shot put with a season best mark of 60-07 and Smith winning the boys long and triple jump in marks of 20-07.25 and 46-01.50.


Federal Way's Cassandra Atkins won both the girls long and triple jump, jumping 18-02.50 and 37-05.50.


Mt. Rainier's Namoi Collins won the girls shot put with a personal best throw of 36-00, besting her previous mark by over 3.5 feet.


Connor Meade of Silas threw 162-02 to win the boys javelin.


5th Annual Clay Lewis Invite

Chiawana's Kade Smith and Southridge's Abdelrahim Abdelrahim went back and forth in the boys long and triple jump, with Smith coming away victoriously in both at Hanford High School.


Smith, who won last year's 4A state title in triple jump, jumped a season best 45-09 to win by seven inches over Abdelrahim's personal best jump of 45-02. In long, Smith and Abdelrahim both jumped personal best marks, with Smith going 22-02.75 and Abdelrahim going 21-08.75.


Kamiakin's Aubrey Harrin had a pair of personal best performances to win two field event competitions. The sophomore jumped 37-05 to win the girls triple jump, followed by a clearance of 5-03 to win high jump.
