South Sound Classic Recap: Distance races produce lifetime best with entertaining finishes

PUYALLUP - Highlighted by some fast-paced distance races, a plethora of personal best times were thrown down at the South Sound Classic this last Saturday at Spark Stadium in Puyallup, highlighted by an entertaining boys 800-meter final.


Defending 4A state champion and Tahoma's own Ryan Lewis led five competitors under two minutes in the 800 as his time of 1:55.12 crossed the tape first for the win.


Gig Harbor's Jonathan Miles was second to Lewis in 1:55.97, with Lakes' Cruize Corvin in third (1:56.71), Snohomish's Kai Yoder in fourth (1:57.59) and Glacier Peak's Joachim Jakuc in fifth (1:59.61).


Tahoma's Julia Stuard completed a Bears' 800 sweep on the girls side, winning in 2:17.84 over Lauren Laws of South Kitsap in 2:18.39. Bonney Lake's Iris Rogel and North Thurston's Alexis Meyer finished third and fourth, respectively, in 2:19.04 and 2:19.41.


Prior to his 800 double, Corvin took care of business in the boys 1,600 in a personal best 4:14.81, outlasting Rogers-Puyallup's Isaac Briggs in 4:16.07. Yelm's Zach Walsh used a late kick to finish in third in 4:18.59, with Emerald Ridge's Conner Wirth taking fourth in 4:19.62. Gig Harbor's Micah Galeana earned fifth in a time of 4:20.35.


Auburn Riverside's Julia Couch dipped under the 5-minute barrier, winning the girls 1,600 in 4:57.88. Emerald Ridge's Emme Bates placed second in 5:00.71, with Bonney Lake freshman Lathan West trailing third in 5:05.13 and Gig Harbor duo Taylor Sletner and Reese Morket right behind in fourth and fifth, respectively, running 5:05.144 and 5:05.82.


Lakes' Zander Trevino and Wirth closed in the final 100 of the boys 3,200 shoulder to shoulder, with Trevino coming out with the win in a margin of 9:23.46-9:23.70. Central Kitsap's Blake Reynolds finished third, running 9:32.76.


Curtis' Eliza White withstood West in the girls 3,200, running a winning time of 10:53.98 to 10:55.59. Port Townsend's Aliyah Yearian out leaned Jackson's Selena Bangerter for third in 10:56.23 to 10:56.56.


Tahoma's Brooke Lyons withstood her competition in the sprint races once again, winning all three in the same meet for the third time this season. The senior ran lifetime best performances in the 100 and 400, running 11.81 and 56.49, and a season best performance in the 200, running 24.95 to complete the sweep.


Glacier Peak's Jana Willems finished second to Lyons in the 100 and 200, running 12.13 and 25.80, while Curtis' Ava Simms was second to Lyons in the 400, running 58.09.


Yelm's Brayden Platt improved upon his state-leading shot put mark, throwing a season best 61-00 to win the boys competition by over 10 feet. The football standout also won the javelin in another season best throw of 189-07, beating Central Kitsap's Roderick Schenk in 183-11 and Curtis' Alex Suk in 181-02.


Cassandra Atkins of Federal Way swept the long and triple jump competitions on the girls side, setting new lifetime best marks of 19-05.5 and 39-09.50. On the boys side, Roman Hutchinson also swept the long and triple jump for the Eagles, jumping 22-08 and 46-05, with teammate Julian Gene Fortin finishing second to him in triple jump at 46-02.


Lincoln-Tacoma's Pray'Cessily Kamuta threw 41-06 to hold off South Kitsap's Grace Degarimore in girls shot put by half an inch in 41-05.50, with Spanaway Lake's Nevaeh Wilson not far behind in third at 41-02.


Jonathan Frazier secured another with for the Abes, winning the boys 110 hurdles in 14.50.


Emerald Ridge's Nicholas Altheimer and Mikayla Gardley swept the 300 hurdles races, with Altheimer running 40.49 to win the boys race and Gardley running 46.54 to win the girls race.


Snohomish's Avery Keith ran 50.57 to win the boys 400, passing by Gig Harbor's Ben Stevens in 50.92.


Curtis long jump standout Titus Morris placed first in the boys 200, running 22.03 to beat Cooper Wilson of Bonney Lake in 22.15.


Spanaway Lake's Da'Shawn Sands clocked 10.94 in the boys 100, edging out Bonney Lake's Cooper Wilson in 10.95 for the win.
